his is an absolutely delightful retelling! I blazed through it in a single sitting. I couldn't do anything but read and immerse myself in this tale about Archie and Leo.
I will admit, I had my doubts. Puss in Boots is one of my faves, and I honestly struggled to see how a retelling could work, but Jacque Stevens nailed it! It is absolutely perfect.
One of my favourite aspects of this retelling is that it incorporates a double romance, which was totally unexpected and worked so brilliantly. The romance between Archie and Ainsley was spot on. I loved the royalty romance and the "he's not good enough" elements. I also enjoyed how the author built on the elements from the fairytale but actually worked with them to make the romance more believable. I loved how dreamy Archie is and also how he doesn't quite know what he wants, but when he finally decides--oh what a wonderful male lead he becomes! The way Archie brings out Ainsley's spunky side was endearing and I loved how she kept trying to set things up so she could be with him, but in the end it was Archie who got that right with just a bit of help.
The second couple I cannot go into details on without giving spoilers, so all I'm going to say is the romance was ace! Truly one of my favourite couples and I'll definitely be revisiting this story for them. They made my heart all warm and fuzzy.
The plot sticks to the original fairytale brilliantly while also fleshing it out in meaningful ways to create a unique and refreshing tale of fae magic, cruel curses, and a power-hungry villain. I loved how the author wrote Leo. He's a very believable cat with an intriguing backstory and, even though I figured out his secret pretty quickly, the way it is enmeshed into the fabric of the story made it into a fantastic twist. And the title! It works so perfectly. Totally loved it.
If you love romantic fantasy, endearing characters, twisty plots, and fairytales, this is THE series you should have gotten like YESTERDAY!
