This story is so intricately woven, and there are so many unexpected twists and turns to the plot. We pick up right where the previous book left off, and continue with the same cast of characters. I'm grateful Aithlin has grown somewhat during the course of this book. Her arc is slow, but steady, and she's finally moved away from her hell-bent focus on revenge, and her own particular brand of "justice" where she gets to play judge, jury, and executioner. Her attitude definitely had me worried at the beginning of this series, but thankfully she's growing and moving away from it, and becoming someone I can properly root for.
I really enjoyed the found family element of this particular novel, and Aithlin's tentative steps towards trusting others. She grew on me as a character. I'd also like to add that I get the impression this author is going from strength to strength, with a much improved style from previous books.
On the whole, this fast-paced, action-packed fantasy adventure is filled with interesting magic (I particularly liked the limitations and specifics), an array of unusual magical creatures including several different types of shifters and awesome, highly-intelligent trolls, and came with a totally unexpected twist at the end.
