Interview with an Author: Abigail Sinclaire

Abigail Sinclaire is an international best-selling author whose imaginative works of playable fantasy adventure fiction are inspired by vivid dreams she's had since childhood. Her captivating writing style will take you on a magical journey where you'll explore a wondrous realm that blurs the lines between dreams and reality. With her spellbinding narratives, you'll encounter a vast array of characters, and be given the extraordinary power to guide their every move, shape their destinies - will they survive or will they meet their peril?

What got you into writing your own stories?

I have been writing since I was a child, I have always had an active and creative imagination. I read a lot when I was a kid, it was my escape from a less than pleasant life. In those books I could be anyone, anywhere. This particular series was inspired by my repeating dreams I have also had since I was a child. I return to the same places in my dreams with the same characters, only to choose differently inside of the dream and play the journey from within.

What genre do you write?

I would classify this as choose your adventure fantasy style with a hint of horror.

Tell us about your WIP.

Escape into the CHOOSE YOUR FATE interactive story. Immerse yourself in a tapestry of fantasy, horror, and time-traveling tales. You wield the power to shape the destiny & FATE of the characters you choose to play. At the end of the episode, your decisions will carve the path. Step into betwixt dreams and reality and navigate the haunting choices in this gripping narrative. The fate of every character rests in your hands. Choose wisely.

How would you describe your writing style?

I would just say that it's very natural, I base a lot of what I write on my life, people I have known, conversations we've had and moments that either broke my heart or lit it on fire. When people read the first chapter, they all say the same thing about a particular heartbreaking moment between the father and the daughter. They all have said they could feel the pain and and actual sensations of the scene based on how I described it. I'll give you a hint, it's something every single person has felt once in their life. A physical sensation, but it stems from deep pain within us all. In short, I write in universal concepts and life lessons in an expressive meaningful way.

How do you write your characters?

You can play the first three free protagonists characters: Payton, Jessica, and Charlotte. I based them on a combination of my personality as a young girl and my two best friends. We were each other's three musketeers, and as much as we complimented and loved each other, we also had stark differences in how we navigated the world. The antagonist, the Witch, I often ask myself while writing - what is the creepiest worst thing I can think someone would do at this moment? Then I write it.

Tell us about the setting your story/stories take place in.

Truly, it's an interactive story within a dream. At first, you play a young girl named Little Star who is suspended between life and death in a hospital and her experience between the realms and returning to her father. Eventually, Little Star has to decide if she will become the antagonist or protagonist in the story, but here's the kicker - there are no wrong decisions. Once you decide this, you will get to play the next set of characters. The Gods have chosen three young women to save their village from the Soulless, a dark creature that storms through, feasting their villagers and collecting their souls. Payton, Jessica, and Charlotte haven't ever gotten along, but now they will have to put everything aside to save their loved ones. You get to play each of the girls, and at the end of the chapters, you can decide what that character will do, which will change the entire story.

Have you written any animal characters? Tell us about one of them.

OMG YES!!! I have an owl named Cedric. He's the Witches companion who used to be a dark prince, but had been transformed into the owl by someone he crossed in his previous life. He's secretly in love with the Witch and hopes that when she escapes she will have enough power to turn him back into a human so he can confess his love to her. I based this character off of an owl in a video game I played with I was a kid, Kings Quest. It's an old click and play style game and I have so many fun memories around it.

How do you get into the flow for writing? Do you have any rituals?

I do! I like to open up my Notion and before I write, I read my WHY. Why is this series so important to me? How do I want it to impact others? What are the hidden messages within my story? How can I use my writing to help others grow in their own lives and look at the world around them differently? This helps me stay inspired while I write.

What would be the greatest achievement for you to aim for as a writer if anything were possible?

I dream of building a community around Choose Your Fate where they are all part of the story. They help me create characters, plots, twists, story-lines, other realms, lore, and even the decisions at the end of chapters. I want them to read the series and feel as though they are truly part of it. To read a passage and say omg that was my idea or YES my character made it into this chapter!!! I was this to be an interactive story, on a whole other level!!!

What are you most grateful for as a writer?

I am so grateful that writing brings me so much joy and that I can share that joy and hope that it has the same impact on others as it has on me. My stories are here to be lessons of our lives here, in the now, in the real world. Are we choosing our best timelines? Are we actively participating in our own lives?

Do you have a day job? What is it?
