Featured Book: The Perfect Drug

Here follows a review of The Perfect Drug by Chaitanya Saini

I am not at all a fan of self help books because for me they are boring and instead of helping, they sometimes depresses the reader. But there are some books with a complete unusual plot and has a very out of the box thought process behind the story. "The Perfect Drug" is one such book.

Book has a protagonist, Ananya who was a very bright and a meritorious student. He got admitted in the prestigious St. Stephen's College, New Delhi. Just like any other child he was working hard to get good grades and to see a smile on his parents face. Later, he fell for a girl and the girl reciprocated the mutual feelings. But some unfortunate events forced Ananya to contemplate about his existence and his value to the world. In the search of the meaning of his life he discovered the book called "Psychedelic Chemistry" and later he started making a drug which may help him in his path of enlightenment. He named it as "The Perfect Drug". This divine potion changed his perspective towards the happenings around him. His eyes can see what other pairs of eyes can't. His emotions juggle between elation at one moment and vulnerability at other. What was that divine potion? What all things happened during his path of enlightenment? What are the circumstances which forces him to discover the drug?

This is definitely not a usual self help book. The plot line is extremely interesting. Author is for sure a very knowledgeable person. As being a science student myself I know many things from the book and this makes it more interesting for me to read it. The most amazing thing about the book is the word play. I extremely love the writing style of the author. It is hilarious, informative, sarcastic, emotional, awesome all the same time. This is definitely a treat for the readers who crave for amazing writing style. And he can also write wonderful poetry as well.

The narration is very crisp and very gripping. It will make you flip the pages till the end. The plot is inspiring in a very unusual way. It teaches many things with the reference of many casual things. But at times plot gets a bit monotonous but later maintains its pace and become much more divine than expected. Some scenes ends very abruptly which is the minute flaw of the book.

Characters were developed very beautifully. Kanika and Akshay were at their best being friends with Ananya. His 3 cousin sisters were shown very innocent and loveable. Neither did I really liked the character of Ananya nor hated it.

On the whole, this book is a must read because it is a divine read with the beautiful writing style, crisp narration, intriguing content and unique plot line.

Be inwardly humble and outwardly unbendable

Who was your favorite character to write and why?

Guddu because of her innocence.

What was the spark that started this book?

I wanted to combine the genres of science fiction and spirituality.

What was the most interesting random fact you researched for this book?

The chemical constituents of mind bending substances.

What's the message you worked into this book? There is no greater power than your self-discipline. If you have control over yourself then you can easily alter the course of Universe.
