I loved this author's first series, set in the same greater world, and I was completely swept off my feet with this start to a whole new cast of characters and a very intriguing addition to the author's overarching storyline. While the Galaxy Flux series can be read without having knowledge of the ForeSender series, I would recommend starting with the ForeSenders, because the worldbuilding is so deep and immersive, new readers might miss some of the subtle connecting threads that are featured in this wonderful sci-fi adventure story.
So far, there is no reference to any magic in this novel, although the greater world incorporates both magic and science. I really enjoyed this more traditional sci-fi adventure about an intrepid crew of intrepid space explorers. The author has really come into his own, and his style is absolutely captivating. I also really connected with the characters, and although there were switches in perspective, they flowed naturally and worked really well.
The fast-paced plot kept me turning those pages, and I stayed up way too late finishing this wonderful story. I'll definitely be diving into the next book as soon as I can, because I'm totally invested.
I can highly recommend this author's complete works. Absolutely fantastic adventures that are unusual and make for immersive reading.
