How did Catherine the Great become who she was? This is the main question the author seeks to answer in this heartbreaking, intense, and ever so believable exploration of what might have happened. I read this novel in a single sitting and absolutely loved every minute of it. The intensity of Sophie/Catherine‘s fictionalised experiences was conveyed brilliantly.
