The Book Dragon

Trapped in Wonderland by Dani Hoots

I loved this version of Wonderland. The concept for this reimagining is very good. It totally captured my imagination and I absolutely loved the ending. Although this is the first in a series and could have ended on a cliffhanger, the author actually pulled it off perfectly, leaving me satisfied and very much intrigued to find out what more this Alice gets up to in future books.

As an anime fan, all the references to some of my favorite shows was an added bonus. I did enjoy the opportunity to geek out over Alice’s references and winks, which were a lot of fun and totally unexpected. I also enjoyed the anthropomorphism of the characters from the original stories by Lewis Carroll. It was a nice touch I appreciated. Lastly, I really, really liked that the original stories were used as the history for this version. It made the whole concept so much deeper.

Unfortunately, although there was a lot to love, I did struggle somewhat with this book and often found myself skimming because the prose is very clunky and doesn’t quite do the concept justice. The characters were also hard to connect with and I think both of these elements may have to do with the fact this author relies heavily on telling, rather than showing with immersive writing.

Nevertheless, it’s definitely good enough for me to recommend, especially for those who also love anime and want an opportunity to include that love in a book, as well as all the anime we love watching. A great effort, and I’m definitely tickled to pick up the next book in the series.
