Like a master weaver, Terral snared me and wove me as a thread into the tapestry of this spellbinding story. I love the magic system. It reminds me of Guy Gavriel Kay’s Fionavar Tapestry, but works the weaving imagery into the magic system at a much more fundamental level. However, that is where the similarities end. “Bloodwoven” is Sword and Sorcery at its finest. It’s a personal journey overlayed onto an epic backdrop, but I love how much the focus of this novel, at least, remains anchored on the personal journey.
Lin is a fantastic character and I absolutely loved the animated and aggravated discussions he ends up having with Tylle over their contrasting versions of their peoples’ history and faith. It beautifully portrays the difficulty of accepting and being open to nuances of belief when we’ve been taught that what we know is the ultimate truth. It certainly gave me the small scale food for thought about large-scale conflicts in our own world.
This is an excellent read and one I definitely recommend for lovers of action-packed fantasy with terrifying monsters, high stakes and great character progression.
