I am really enjoying this series but although the storyline has really captured my interest and I absolutely love the characters Winyx and Faelyn, there were some things that made this book a real challenge to read. It is a testament to the intriguing storyline that I kept on reading even though I put the book down several times to rest. It is for this reason I’ve docked only half a star, bringing my rating to 3.5, because I honestly could have LOVED this book.
What worked for me:
The court intrigue, the twisty plot and the two main characters definitely made this book worthwhile for me. I’m glad I kept reading and I will definitely finish the final book in the series just to know what happens. Honestly, this book has the potential to be Lord of the Rings meets Game of Thrones. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite meet that potential.
What didn’t work for me:
There were several chapters dedicated to the viewpoint of side characters and I felt this not only detracted from the twisty plot because at times key events were given away, reducing their surprise value, but it also kept throwing me off my game. I could have binged this book in a few hours, but instead, because of all these additional points of view, I kept having to take breaks between chapters because I struggled to shift from one character’s perspective to another. I’m also not a big fan of cliffhangers and this book ends on a really big one.
That said, I’m still glad I persevered and finished the book. It’s a good read, and as middle books in a trilogy go, it moves forward well.
