The Other Wolf Series by Heather G. Harris

Protection of the Pack, Book 1:

This new series dives right in with Lucy shortly after she was turned into a werewolf. This event is detailed in "The Other Realm" series, which follows Lucy's best friend Jessica. Lucy has become pack alpha and has to prove herself. On top of that, one of the wolves in her pack is murdered, leaving her with a big ol' mess to work through while gaining the trust of her pack.

Lucy is an interesting character and some of the hints to her past that got revealed in this book make her even more intriguing. Additionally, the expanded view on werewolf lore and pack rules builds on the existing world very well. There's lots of action and sleuthing, as per this author's speciality.

It's a fun, fast-paced read and definitely entertaining.

Guardians of the Pack, Book 2:

I totally loved this book. It's a wonderful murder mystery and werewolf pack politics with intrigue and unexpected twists. Lucy makes for a fascinating lead character, and her wolf Esme makes me laugh all the time with the misunderstandings of human expressions and turns of phrase. This volume also reaveals a lot on the worldbuilding front, things that were only vaguely hinted at in the connected series about Jinx.

The plot is intense and I just had to keep turning those pages to find out what happened. And I like how the author manages to resolve key points in the story, particularly the murder mystery, while setting things up to continue in the next book without actually having a cliffhanger. I really prefer this system of a holistic story within a broader, continuous series.

I'll be diving into the next book asap, because this is such an entertaining series and I just have to know what happens next.

Saviour of the Pack, Book 3:

This novel turned out to be such a disappointment. Yes, the story continues and it's as exciting and action-packed as ever. However, the author decided to add some new information on the world-building front that became inconsistent with what had come before and all the little niggling "oh, but that doesn't work anymore" issues that kept cropping up afterwards just made this one less enjoyable to read.

I'm glad Lucy found her birth family and resolved that issue. I'm also glad the black witch from the previous volume was discovered and the twist on her identity was quite a surprise. The mystery elements are well thought out as usual.

I didn't like how Greg Manners practically disappeared in the battles. That part made no sense considering his backstory, especially when he could be support to Lucy/Esme's awesomeness. And Lucy's backstory with Renard that comes out in this volume ended up cementing the massive worldbuilding inconsistency I mentioned previously.

So yeah, unfortunately this volume is not as streamlined as the previous parts of this series. I don't know if I'll continue when the other planned books come out in the Other Wolf series, as I can't see how the author can fix this jarring disconnect from the first book in this series. However, I am curious to give the witch series a try. I've always liked Amber's character, so maybe I'll find less issue there, since the worldbuilding snafu is linked to the werewolves and Lucy's storyline particularly.
